"First I was fortunate to find the family bible of William O. Mitchell's
parents which is owned by a descendant living in Dallas, TX.
Henry Mitchell was born somewhere in Virginia about
1767 and migrated to Johnston Co., SC as a young man. He was in Johnston
County in the 1790 census. There he married Mary Ann "Polly" Avera
and
they soon moved to Chester County, SC. Mary Ann was born on December
22, 1770
in Johnston Co., NC to Jacob and Ann Fail Avera. They were both raised
in
that county and married February 14, 1764. Mary Ann and Henry
Mitchell
were married on September 4, 1792 in Johnston County but, as I indicated,
they soon moved to Chester Co., SC. There they had their ten
children and
then Mary Ann died on September 14, 1810 and was buried in the graveyard
of
the Smith's Chapel Methodist Church in Chester County.
William Oliver Mitchell was born March 23, 1803.
He
was married to Anna Thomas around 1824 in Chester County and they remained
in that county several years before moving to Troup County, GA to be near
his older brother, Hardy Mitchell, and his youngest sister by his mother,
Elizabeth Mitchell Shadinger. As you know he later lived in Heard Co.,
GA,
Talladega Co., AL, and finally, Clay Co., AL where he died August 7, 1874.
Anna Thomas, his wife, was born ca. 1794 in Buncombe Co., NC and was several
years older than her husband. After the death of her husband she moved
to
Polk Co., AR to live with one of her sons and she died there sometime
thereafter.
We know that Jacob Avera, the father of Mary Ann Avera
was born ca. 1743/44
in Edgecombe Co., NC to Alexander Avery and his wife, Olive. He married,
as
I have indicated, Ann Fail, daughter of Thomas Fail. The name of Thomas
Fail's
wife has never been determined.
Henry Mitchell, father of William Oliver, was a man who
did much buying and
selling of land. After the death of Mary Ann, he married Mrs. Nancy
Boyd Jones,
a widow. He had five children by her. Nancy preceded her husband
in death.
Henry Mitchell died on November 22, 1843 in Chester Co., SC and is buried
by
his first wife in the Smith's Chapel Methodist Church cemetery, three to
four
miles north of the city of Chester. His children by Mary Ann were Nancy,
b. 1793,
James, b. 1795, John, b. 1797, Polly, b. 1798, Hardy, b. 1799, Matilda, b.
1801,
William Oliver, b. 1803, Henry Smith, b. 1804, Benjamin Bryan, b. 1806, and
Elizabeth, b. 1809.
Of these children, Nancy died in Neshoba Co., MS in 1872;
James and John both
died in Macon Co., AL; Polly prob. died in MS; Hardy d. in Cobb
Co., GA in 1860;
Matilda d. in Chester Co., SC; William Oliver d. in Clay Co., AL;
Henry Smith
d. in Chester Co., SC; Benjamin Bryan d. in Union Parish, LA;
and Elizabeth
d. in Carroll Co., GA.
The last five children of Henry Mitchell by his second
wife were: Linnay Oliver,
b. 1812, Jane Oliver, b. 1812 (twins), Hanna, b. 1814, Moses Smith, b. 1816,
and Charles Boyd, b. 1818. The first four of these died in Chester
Co., SC.
Charles Boyd Mitchell died in 1901 in Robertson Co., TX.
This should take a while to digest but I am glad to share
it with you.

The birthdates of the parents were not in the
bible but they were taken from their tombstones in Chester Co., SC.
