The following information was given to me by R. L. Guffin
Ann Fail (mother of Mary Ann Avera who married Henry Mitchell)
was born April 3, 1747 in Johnston Co., NC and married Jacob
Avera on February 14, 1764 in Johnston County.
Ann was the daughter of Thomas Fail, b. ca. 1700 in Henrico
Co., VA to John Fail/Faile and his wife, the former Mary Hatcher.
John was born abt. 1656, prob. in England, and was married previously
to Ann Russell (according some researchers). They had several children.
Meanwhile, Mary Hatcher had been married twice, first to a Mr. Burton,
and second, to Gilbert Elam Jr. She had a daughter by the first
marriage and several children by Elam before he died. Then she
married John Faile in St. Johns Church in Henrico County, VA on
January 3, 1697. They had John Jr. abt. 1798, our Thomas abt. 1700,
and Mary Faile abt. 1702. The best research shows that Mary Hatcher
was born in 1658 to Edward Hatcher of Henrico and his wife who many
believe was Mary Ward. Edward Hatcher was born in England or VA around
1633-35 and died in Henrico Co., VA in 1711. John Faile died the following
year, 1712 in Henrico.
Edward Hatcher was the son of William Hatcher, a native of England
who migrated to Virginia in the 1630's. He later became a member of the
Virginia House of Burgesses representing Henrico County on several occasions.
William Hatcher was born in England around 1613 and died in Henrico County
in 1680. The name of his wife has not been proven.
Back to Thomas Fail, our ancestor...he lived for many years in Johnston
Co., NC but near the end of his life he moved to Lancaster Co., SC where he
died in 1777. Some say his wife's name was Elizabeth but I have no proof
and certainly do not know her maiden name.
